The Benefits:
A porch is one of the first things you notice about a property when you first look at it. A great one can set the tone for the rest of your home and help to really frame the property. Not only do our designs look fantastic, adding plenty of character to the property, but they also have physical benefits too, such as acting as improving home security.

Purpose:
A Porch, is a roofed structure, usually open at the sides, projecting from the face of a building and used to protect the entrance. A porch doesn’t have to be at the front of a property and a property can have more than one. It is also known in the United States as a veranda and is sometimes referred to as a portico. A porch has many purposes, but many suggest that it’s primary purpose is to make the property look good.
Sizes:
The maximum size for a porch under permitted development in the UK is 3x3m. However you can go larger than this (see more on planning permission below).
Materials:
We will fully discuss your requirements before we start on the build of your porch. Typically we work with European Oak (or other varieties of the oak family) as this is a hard wearing timber. But we also work with Sapelle, Meranti and Par & Painted timber. If you’ve got an idea of a material that you’d like to use though we’ll happily discuss. We also do all of the brick work and tiling detail.
Planning permission?
The planning rules for porches are applicable to any external door to the dwellinghouse.
Adding a porch to any external door of your house is considered to be permitted development, not requiring an application for planning permission, provided:
- the ground floor area (measured externally) would not exceed three square metres.
- no part would be more than three metres above ground level (height needs to be measured in the same way as for a house extension).
- no part of the porch would be within two metres of any boundary of the dwellinghouse and the highway.
